Research Lines
Lab4U&Spaces project can be seen as a living lab to which the three research lines converge, by merging physical and digital elements, to promote sustainable and safe urban space solutions and enhance interaction and mobility. Lab4U&Spaces project will benefit from the strong networking of competences of the three interrelated research lines, bridging the gap between urban intelligence and physical, virtual and digital elements, and sharing the commitment with developing added value products to drive new uses of urban spaces.
RL1 - Urban space, community, environment and technological interfaces
Scope and Scientific Objectives
Improve societal experiences and enhance the use of urban spaces, augmenting the human presence in a digitalized urban realm. Aiming to define strategies that will contribute for the expansion of the liveability in public spaces with the collective 'construction' of digital (and ‘open’) interfaces. Research Line 1 will frame a set of innovative Interactive Urban Space products that will contribute for the recognition and integration of the individual in a more sustainable public arena, reflecting their use in different urban/public space typologies/contexts, such as public squares, hospitals, university campus, transport stations, shopping malls, etc.

RL2 - Universal cyber-physical elements
Scope and Scientific Objectives
Promotes advances in cyber-physical systems applied in open urban-like environments, aiming to homogenize fundamental principles in the construction of digital components when used in the various application domains. It includes the design and development of an infrastructure to support the project's information system, from the physical to the application level and of navigation and tracking techniques oriented towards urban spaces, both for objects (in particular indoor location), and for humans (multitracking), ensuring the fulfilment of non-functional requirements (security and privacy) and the metrics necessary for its management.

RL3 - Smart & sustainable products for urban space
Scope and Scientific Objectives
The Research Line 3 combines the versatility and design possibilities that extrusion-based additive manufacturing enables, with the sustainability and eco-efficiency associated to recycled urban plastic waste, in order to generate responsive eco-products, specifically developed to address particular issues identified in urban areas and improve the quality of life of the population. To achieve such development, RL3 encompasses the study of recycled plastic urban waste and define strategies for its reuse, definition of design guidelines for AM and the integration of functional systems into building parts, and process optimization analysis by parameterization experiments to manufacture a responsive eco-urban furniture that is capable to interact with the surrounding environment and/or population.
