The Guidelines for the design of a new generation of interactive urban space products (deliverable D02)
The Guidelines for the design of a new generation of interactive urban space products (Guidelines from now on) is the document that constitutes the conceptual framework for the development of the new Urban Cyber-Physical Device (UCPD) use case, and stablishes the principles, the requirements and practical constraints of the design proposal. It synthesizes (i) the research initial assumption, as stated in the Lab4U&Spaces Research Project Concept Note and further documents of the research project application; (ii) the results and lessons learned from the Atlas for the design of future e-cities (D01) production; and (iii) the results and conclusions of the initial research team meetings on the Use Case Integration (A3).

In this process some postulates and basic design guidelines have been stablished: (i) the UCPD use case will be a type of augmented urban furniture modular system, (ii) the fabrication material will be recycled plastic; (iii) the fabrication will resort to additive manufacturing (AM), namely extrusion-based additive manufacturing (EBAM) by CNC robotic arm extrusion; and (iv) the localization of the use case deployment will be the central square of Minho University’s Azurém Campus, in Guimarães.

As the second deliverable (D02) of Research Line 1 (RL1) the Guidelines document is structured in such a way to respond to the following tasks of Activities 1, 2 and 3:
-
A1T3 “Design guidelines, strategies and methods”;
-
A2T3 “Design principles for a new breed of Interactive Urban Space Products”;
-
A3T1 “Requirements”.
-

The Guidelines provide detailing of the tasks of the several design and manufacturing process stages, from pre-design requirements to post-fabrication evaluation, focused on the two main design concerns of the Use Case device (cyber integration and sustainability), which can be unfold like this:
-
Cyber integration
-
Interface design: input and output devices interactions;
-
Software: server, APIs and applications;
-
Hardware (sensors, microprocessors and communication technologies);
-
-
Sustainability
-
Energy: renewable energy sources (solar energy);
-
Material: recycled plastic;
-
Fabrication process: extrusion-based additive manufacturing (EBAM) by robotic arm (3D print).
